Step Up Day: Step Up day is scheduled for the second to last day of school, June 18. Students love this day because they will meet their teacher for next year and their new classmates. Students will go home with a letter from their new teacher, a supply list for next year, and information about a new summer reading initiative.
This is an exciting time, but it can also bring nervous feelings for some students. These emotions are completely normal when facing change. As parents, you can help ahead of time by:
- Normalizing these feelings—let your child know it’s okay to feel both excited and unsure.
- Reflecting on the positives—talk about the good experiences they’ve had this year, the friends they’ve made, and the qualities they appreciated in their teachers. This helps them see that each year brings new chances for learning and friendship.
Afterwards, your child might come home excited about their new class, or they may feel disappointed if they didn’t get the teacher or friends they hoped for. Class placement is a thoughtful process that considers many factors. If your child feels disappointed, you can support their resilience by saying things like:
- "I understand you’re disappointed. It’s okay to feel that way."
- "Sometimes new experiences can be challenging, but they can also lead to new friendships and opportunities."
- "You might find something you really like about your new class once you give it a chance."
- "Remember, you can still see your friends at recess and outside of school."
- "Every teacher is different, but each one has something special to offer."
- "I’m proud of you for sharing your feelings and being open about them."
- "Let’s think about some ways you can make the most of this new experience."
If your child is not returning to Monroe El in the Fall and you haven’t told us yet, now is the time to do so! We will make alternative arrangements for your child on Step Up Day. Please email
MEOffice@monroeps.org with this information.
Juneteenth Lessons: As we will be in school on Juneteenth, the district has put together lessons for students on the holiday and what it means. Age appropriate picture books have been selected for every grade and teachers have been coached on how to help students learn about this important day in history.
Monroe El Lending Library: Thank you so much for supporting your child’s reading journey this year! Your encouragement at home has helped our students grow immensely. To keep the reading excitement going all summer long, please visit our Little Free Lending Library located right in front of the school. You are welcome to stop by anytime to pick up a new book or drop off books you would like to share with others.
Early Dismissals THIS Week: Each day will be a 2 hour early release day. Please be sure that an adult is prepared to receive your child as school dismisses.
